The Ultimate private Wellington film location tour - we've been guiding in Middle-earth since 2002!

Starts and finishes in Wellington each day.

Wellington is the home of film in New Zealand, and some of the best Lord of the Rings scenes were shot in and around the Wellington area. If you are a serious fan of Tolkien and fandoms in general, this is the ultimate fan tour to take while you're in town.

What sets this tour apart is a hike to the Putangirua Pinnacles, which was used as a filming location for The Paths of the Dead. It's a long drive and a serious walk, which is why it's not included on any single day LOTR tour.

We also visit all the major filming locations in and around Wellington, and join the Weta Workshop tour, which showcases the art, props, prosthetics and processes that make them the best in the world at what they do.

We've been guiding LOTR tours since 2002, and love to geek out and share our passion for Tolkien, and film & fantasy in general!

Your tour is all inclusive, and covers meals and the Weta tour price.

Film locations visited include:
- River Anduin
- Lothlorien
- The Paths of the Dead (Putangirua Pinnacles in real life)
- Rivendell
- Gardens of Isengard
- Faramir Dreams of Boromir
- Aragorn is rescued by Brego
- "Get off the Road" Scene
- Fleeing the Ringwraith in the Outer Shire
- The Black Gate

Other places we visit:
- Scorchorama Cafe (where the stars used to hang out)
- Roxy Cinema
- Embassy Cinema (home of the Return of the King and the Unexpected Journey world premieres)
- Weta Workshop, for the Workshop tour and documentary
- Mount Victoria Lookout (because it's beautiful!)

Remember the US Marines who trained in Wellington in WWII, before sailing to some of the Pacific's most notorious battlefields. Visit the sites of camps, and areas of significance to the troops.

In 1942, thousands of US Marines descended on Wellington and the surrounding area. They were here to train before sailing to the War in the Pacific. They were also present as a line of defense, as New Zealand's own troops were already committed to the war effort.

We will visit several sites in the city - The Plaque on the Waterfront that commemorates the first Marine Ship landing, Anderson Park in the botanic Gardens, which could house up to 4000 troops, and Old Saint Paul's Church, which still flies the US Marine Corp flag, alongside the 48 star US flag - left behind by the troops after they went home. We will also pay our respects to our own New Zealand troops by visiting the National War Memorial.

From the city, we drive north to Kapiti to see the US Marine's Memorial at Queen Elizabeth II Park. From there we can also visit the site of Camp MacKay. Very little remains - only foundations in most cases - but with stories and photographs, we will paint a picture of what life was like for these brave men.

Inclusions:

Wairarapa Wine and Food Private Day Tour

Wairarapa Wine and Food Private Day Tour

Visit the Wairarapa Region and enjoy local wines, produce and other delicious bites.

Just over an hour Northeast of Wellington is the wine village of Martinborough. Famous for their Pinot Noir, the area is also known for producing olives, and boutique olive oil is a big part of the local industry today. On our private day tour from Wellington city, we'll enjoy both, as well as some other delicious flavours - cheese in Featherston and Schoc chocolates in Greytown.

Due to the varied opening hours of local cellar doors, and the varied taste of our guests, we don't always visit the same restaurant or wineries on our tour. Instead we pick the best of what's available on each day and tailor to the tastes of our guests. We'll always visit a minimum of three wineries , and can add more if you're serious about your wine.

We start with a drive north through the Hutt Valley, crossing the Remutaka Hill road into the Wairarapa region. Our first stop is at Featherston, where we call into local cheese vendor, C'est Cheese, for a cheese tasting, coffee and maybe a cheese scone too. We then proceed to Martinborough and call on Olivo, where we discover the olive oil production process, before tasting serval types of olive oil.

From here we hit one winery for tasting before enjoying lunch at a local winery or restaurant (depending on the day of the week). After lunch we can visit at least two more wineries, before leaving Martinborough for the nearby village of Greytown, where we visit Schoc Chocolates for a tasting and your choice of chocolate or truffle.

From Greytown we return over the Remutaka Hill, to make our way back to Wellington City.

This tour is customizable, and can be shortened to accommodate Cruise Ship shore excursions.

Inclusions

- Morning tea/coffee & cheese tasting at C'est Cheese in Featherston
- Wine tasting at a minimum of three wineries
- Olive oil tour and tasting at Olivo
- Lunch at a local Martinborough Winery or Restaurant
